This is an example of a U.S. Model 1816 Army Contract Pistol that was manufactured in the period between 1817 and 1820 by Simeon North of Middletown, Connecticut. There were 19,374 Model 1816 Army Contract Flintlock Pistols manufactured by Simeon North. The pistol has a black walnut stock that extends approximately 1/2-inch in front of the barrel band. The round barrel has an iron back strap. The double-strapped barrel band has a brass front sight blade on the front strap and is secured by a spring-loaded stud between the straps. The pistol has a flat iron side plate, iron buttcap and iron trigger guard. The casehardened lock plate is flat with beveled edges forward of the hammer and convex behind it. The lock is fitted with a detachable brass pan and convex, reinforced, hammer, The pistol has a hickory ramrod with threaded and slotted, iron, ferrule. The lock plate is stamped with the early style markings that consist of "S.NORTH" in a downward curve above an Eagle/Shield with "U" to the left of the eagle and "S" to the right and "MIDLtn CON." in an upward curve below the eagle. The left side of the barrel is stamped with a "P" proofmark above "US". The left stock flat is stamped with the script "LS" initials of Ordnance inspector Luther Sage enclosed in an oval. The "D" inspection mark of Sub-Inspector Samuel Dale is stamped on the left rear strap of the barrel band, the side plate, back strap, trigger, buttcap and the side plate, tang and buttcap screws.

Condition: Good. The pistol is complete, original and remains in the original flintlock configuration. The barrel, lock and iron furniture have a dark, untouched, brown patina. There is moderate-heavy flash pitting on the right side of the barrel surrounding the flash hole and on adjacent portions of the hammer and frizzen. The barrel, back strap, buttcap, lock and trigger guard have scattered patches of surface corrosion. The brass flash pan has a deep, untouched, age patina. The lock plate markings are light but fully legible. The barrel markings are strong and the "D" sub-inspection marks are fully legible. The walnut stock is in good condition and has the same, untouched, patina as the barrel, lock and iron furniture. The edges of the stock surrounding the lock plate and the left flat are sharp. The stock has some minor dents behind the lock and on the left flat behind the side plate. There is an old, repaired, hairline crack in the right side of the stock between the trigger guard finial and the back strap. The encircled "LS" inspection mark on the left stock flat is fully legible. This is a solid representative example of a Simeon North Model 1816 Army Contract Pistol. It is difficult to find original examples of U.S M1816's in original, flintlock configuration.
