This is an example of a U.S. Model 1816 Army Contract Flintlock Pistol manufactured by Simeon North of Middletown, Connecticut between 1817 and 1820. The top of the barrel is boldly stamped with New York "S.N.Y." markings. The pistol has iron furniture and a black walnut stock. The round barrel has a two-strap barrel band with fluted straps and a brass front sight. The barrel band is secured by the "Wickham Improvement" spring-actuated located between the straps on the right side of the stock. The lock plate is flat with beveled edges in front of the hammer and convex behind it. The lock has a convex, reinforced hammer and detachable brass pan. The pistol has a flat, iron, side plate and iron back strap buttcap and trigger guard. The hickory ramrod has a swelled head but lacks the slotted iron finial found on some Model 1816 pistols. The lock plate is stamped with the first style marking that consists of an eagle and shield motif flanked by "U" and "S". "S. NORTH" is stamped in an downward curve above the eagle and "MIDLtn CON." stamped in an upward curve below it. A "P" proofmark followed by "US" is stamped on the top of the barrel to the left of the "S.N.Y." marking. The "A" inspection mark of Oliver Allen is stamped on the left side of the rear barrel band strap, the side plate, back strap, trigger and on the top of the side plate, back strap and buttcap screws. A smaller "V" inspection mark of Benjamin Chew Vining is stamped next to the "A" on the barrel band, side plate, back strap, trigger, side plate, back strap and buttcap screws as well as on the buttcap. The encircled, script initials "LS" (Ordnance Inspector Luther Sage) are visible on the left stock flat and an inverted "A" is stamped above the "LS" inspection mark on the left flat.

Serial Number: NSN
Condition: Good. The pistol remains in the original flintlock configuration. The barrel, lock and iron furniture have a sliver-gray patina with patches of age discoloration and scattered light pitting. There is moderate flash pitting on the right side of the barrel and back strap surrounding the flash hole and on adjacent areas of the frizzen, lock and hammer. The lock plate markings are light but legible. The barrel markings are sharp. The sub-inspection marks on the barrel band, side plate and other components are light but visible. The stock is in fair condition with numerous small handling marks. The edges of the left flat and the portions of the stock surrounding the lock are rounded from handling. There are old, filler repairs in the stock at the rear of the lock plate and below the left side of the barrel band. This is a solid example of a New York marked, North Model 1816 Army Contract Pistol in original flintlock configuration.
