U.S. Savage Model 1863 Civil War Rifle-Musket

Blade front and 3-leaf rear sights, with the barrel marked "1863" on top of the breech, "V/ P/ eagle head" on the upper left flat, and an eagle on the bolster, with "B" on the tang behind the screw. The lock plate is dated "1863" behind the hammer and marked with an American eagle over "U.S." and "SAVAGE.R.FA.Co/MIDDLETOWN.CON." ahead. Smooth straight wrist stock, with a brown leather sling, "G.A.L." and an illegible cartouche on the left side, and a "US" marked buttplate. According to notes provided by the consignor, the arm was issued to Robert Barrett Sr. an ancestor with the Georgia State Militia and a veteran of the Battle of Atlanta who reportedly took the Savage home immediately after it was issued and went into combat with his own shotgun instead. Family legend says the rifle was retained for "masonic purposes", but that it was otherwise unused.

Fine, showing a small amount of spotting on the bright steel components, along with some light handling marks. The reoiled stock is also fine, with some minor pressure dents and the cartouche having been recut to remove the excess oil. The sling shows mild wear and cracking appropriate to age. Mechanically excellent.
