This is one of 1,600 Remington Model 1841 Rifles altered by F.H. Grosz of New York. These rifles feature a turned down barrel muzzle with a small square bayonet stud added to the underside near the muzzle and a repositioned blade front sight behind the turn-down area. This alteration allows the barrel to accept the Model 1842 socket bayonet. These rifles were part of a New York state contract that were all delivered by December 1861. Some of these rifles are known to have been issued to Federal units and N.Y. 7th, 10th, 12th, and 192nd Regiments. The lock plate of this rifle has a faint three line Remington marking with the date 1849 stamped vertically behind the hammer. Barrel tang has a partial 1849 date and the barrel is stamped "U.S./SK/P" at the breech. The stock has two cartouches and a brass patch box.
