A scarce example of the massive Bowie Knife-bayonet designed by Admiral John A. Dahlgren for the U.S. Navy Whitney Plymouth Rifle. Manufactured by Ames Manufacturing of Chicopee, Mass. The knife-bayonet features an 11 1/2 inch semi-spear point blade measuring 1/3" thick, dated 1861 on the right ricasso with the Ames address on the reverse. Solid gilted brass guard and hilt, with a grooved walnut grip. With sheath, unmarked black leather with brass tip, throat and frog stud. No inspection marks are present, thus making this specimen unique.

Condition: Very fine with the excellent blade exhibiting some mild scratches, and a slight bend in the tip. A mixed patina is showing on the hilt, with some handling marks present on the grip. Sheath is very fine, with some fading and scuffing of the leather and mixed color on the gilted fittings.
