U.S.N.-marked Jenks “Mule Ear” percussion single shot carbine, .54 cal., 24” round barrel, brown finish, brass trigger guard, barrel bands and butt plate, wood stock; this gun is in overall good condition showing a dark patina on metal surfaces with some brown areas; on top of barrel at breech are markings “Wm. Jenks, USN, RC (inspector), P (proof), and dated 1846”; action is crisp, good early smooth bore with round loading aperture (standard aperture is oval); lockplate correctly marked; wood stock shows wear with scattered dings, mars and scratches with an old crack on the right side of the wrist, some losses around the lockplate and an old “P” carved into the right side of the butt stock and left side of the stock above the trigger guard and a “C” stamped into the top of the butt stock comb. The only mule-ear type arm officially accepted by the U.S. armed forces and popular at the time for its limited number of moving parts. Est.: $1,600-$3,200.
