U.S. Model 1861 Bridesburg Contract Rifle-Musket
This 1861 pattern rifle-musket was manufactured by one of the subcontractors to Springfield Armory; Alfred Jenks & Sons of Bridesburgs, Pennsylvania. Although this is an 1861 pattern contract rifle-musket, these rifles took on some of the later features found on the 1861 Special rifle-musket, and the 1863 pattern rifle-musket such as the three barrel bands with no retaining springs that were split on the bottom and held on with a single screw. The lock plate is marked with the "eagle/shield" directly to the right of the hammer and below the bolster it is marked "U.S./BRIDESBURG". The rear of the lock plate is dated 1863 and the barrel is dated "1864". The left barrel flat has the standard "V/P/eagle head" proof and inspection marks. Oil finished stock with "IN" stamped on the left stock flat, with the letter "C" in front of the trigger guard and the letter "W" behind it. The musket has the three leaf folding rear sight and a tulip head steel ramrod.
