U.S. Model 1850 staff and field officer’s sword by Ames with government inspection stamps J. H. and 1861 dated. The sword has had two brass plaques sweated to the scabbard long ago that are engraved GeneralVandever’s staff and field working sword, and U.S. inspectors stamped. This exact sword was purchased by well-known old time collector Mel Kessen from the heirs of Major General William Vandever who lived inCalifornia. Mr. Kessen also purchased an ornate presentation sword with a large group of Civil War artifacts belonging to Vandever. Kessen kept this 1850 because he felt the General had used it in the Civil War as aworking sword and sold the entire remainder of the ensemble including the presentation sword for a price he could not refuse at the Las Vegas show approx. 10 years ago. The scabbard shows Ames manufacture marks and the sword is in good condition showing some normal wear and use but is untouched and very good overall. General Vandever had a great war record and he was appointed Indian inspector by Pres. Grant in the 1870’s.
