This is an example of a U.S. Model 1843 carbine manufactured by Simeon North in Middletown, Connecticut, in 1849. This carbine is one of the famous group of 5000 Model 1843 carbines sold as obsolete for $3.50 by the Ordnance Department in August 1861 and subsequently purchased by speculators, rifled, and resold to General John C. Fremont for $22.00 each. The rifled Model 1843 carbines were then issued to Federal volunteer cavalry regiments who carried them for much of the Civil War. The carbine has a breech lever mounted on the right side of the receiver, rifled .58 caliber barrel, sling bar and ring on the left side of the receiver and ramrod/cleaning rod mounted beneath the barrel. The barrel, receiver, barrel bands, trigger guard and buttplate have a brown lacquer finish. The breechblock and hammer are casehardened and the breech lever is niter blued. The black walnut stock has an oil finish. The top of the breechblock is roll-stamped: "U.S./S.NORTH/MIDDLtn/CONN./1849" in five lines. "STEEL" is stamped on the top of the breech behind the rear sight. The Ordnance sub-inspector's initials "JCB" are stamped on the left side of the breech below the rear sight. The script initials "JCB" are stamped in a rectangle on the left stock flat. An illegible ordnance inspection mark is stamped on the opposite side of the stock in the same position. An inverted "W" is lightly cut in the left side of the stock near the comb and several illegible letters are stamped below the "W". The Model 1843 Hall-North carbines were the primary carbine issued to the 1st and 2nd Dragoon regiments during the Mexican War and continued to be carried by the Dragoons for several years after the war. The rifled .58 caliber Model 1843 carbines purchased by General Fremont are important and historic weapons that saw considerable Civil War service.

Stock: walnut
Gauge: 58 percussion
Finish: brown/casehardened
Grips:
Serial Number: NSN
Condition: Very good. The carbine shows service wear but retains traces of the original brown lacquer and case-hardened finish. The carbine has not been cleaned and the receiver, breechblock and hammer have scattered spots of surface discoloration. Flash pitting on the hammer, breechblock and percussion nipple is minimal. The breechblock and barrel markings are clear. The stock is in good to very good condition and shows moderate handling wear. The edges of the stock below and behind the receiver are rounded from handling and the Ordnance inspection marks are faint. The sides of the forearm and lower portion of the stock have scattered dents and light scratches. This is a very good example of a historic Model 1843 Hall-North carbine.
