U. S. Model 1840 pattern heavy Cavalry saber, type imported and used during Civil War, with C and J marking at top rear of blade (Soligen). The blade shows an old hand stamped number "8712"; the hilt shows a deeppatina, the wire wrapped grip is good, the scabbard shows black and red enamel paint with a gold painted drag. The blade shows light to moderate pitting and erosion, no cleaning; the scabbard shows 50-70% of thisold painted finish, and areas where finish has scratched off have gone to a dark patina with some pitting. The paint on the scabbard appears to be 19th century. The numbers on the hilt may have been to identify the swordin a museum or veterans display. Many of this model sword were used by both sides during the Civil War. Est.: $300-$600
