U.S. Model 1836 Johnson Contract Flintlock Pistol

This is a very nice example of a U.S. Johnson Model 1836 flintlock pistol manufactured in 1841. The pistol has the distinctive swivel ramrod with button shaped head, barrel band with side plate extension and back strap with integral buttcap. The lock plate is marked "U.S./R. JOHNSON/MIDDN CONN./1841" between the hammer and the frizzen spring. The top of the barrel is stamped "U.S./JCB/P" with small "H" sub-inspector marks stamped on most of the components. The lock has a brass detachable fenced pan, brass blade front and tang mounted dished oval shaped rear sights. The barrel, barrel band, side plate, trigger guard and back strap/buttcap are iron and finished armory bright. The trigger, lock plate, hammer and frizzen are casehardened. The pistol has an oil finished black walnut stock which is stamped with the Ordnance Inspector's script initials "WAT" in a vertical oval and the Ordnance Sub-Inspector's script initials "JH" in a horizontal oval. Model 1836 Pistols were the primary handgun carried by the Dragoons and Mounted Rifles during the Mexican War and were the last U.S. flintlock martial pistol. The pistol is widely considered to be the best designed and most attractive of all U.S. flintlock handguns.

Extremely fine. With the exception of the lock, hammer and frizzen the metal surfaces remain bright with a few small areas of discoloration. The lock, frizzen and hammer show flashes of original case colors mixed with a smooth dark patina. The stock is excellent with some minor dings and scratches, and sharp cartouches. The edges of the flats remain sharp. The markings are crisp and clear. The action is excellent.
