First production Model 1803 rifle manufactured by the U.S. Armory at Harpers Ferry, Virginia, between 1803 and 1807. The rifle has a 33-inch half-octagon/half-round barrel with distinctive ramrod under-rib with two iron ramrod ferrules. The walnut half-stock has a small cheek rest and is attached to the barrel by a key. The stock has brass buttplate, large brass patch box, brass trigger guard with finger spur and small brass reinforcing band on the forearm. The original lock has been replaced with a period, English, Ketland and Co., lock with "United States" marking on rear. The lock appears to be a period replacement. The Model 1803 rifle is a key U.S. martial arm which has the distinction of being the only flintlock rifle produced by a U.S. national armory. Model 1803 rifles saw extensive service during the War of 1812.
BBL: 33 inch
Stock:
Gauge: 69 bore
Finish: bright
Grips:
Serial Number: NSN
Condition: Fair. The bored out, smoothbore barrel has a dark patina with heavy pitting. The proof and inspection marks on the left barrel flat are faint with the "US" in the oval very good. The ramrod is a replacement. The replacement lock is heavily pitted and poorly fitted to the rifle but shows the same wear as the rifle. The stock is also in fair condition with heavy handling wear and has several steel nail reinforcements. This is a good representative example of an important U.S. martial arm.
