U. S. Mississippi rifle by Whitney of New Haven dated 1854 on lock, bored out to .58 cal., with 2-leaf long range rear sight added, and ring on barrel on which to affix saber bayonet. This Mississippi wasconverted for Civil War use. The rifle remains in good to very good condition with a brown patina finish on barrel and some original brown mixed in. The lock shows traces of case hardening within a patina,there is some scattered erosion and pitting, mostly at the breech. The stock is good with some light cleaning, traces of cartouche on left side by sideplate and center of rear butt stock. There are some small losses onthe edges and around the lock; the stock is generally good overall. The action is good, the markings are good, bore good, original style ramrod is included.
