This is one of 400 U.S. purchased Winchester Hotchkiss Second Model Army Bolt Action Carbines. This example has the correct 24 inch barrel with blade front and adjustable "ski slope" type rear sight, saddle ring stud with ring on the left side of the stock, and a nickel plated forend cap. The left side of the barrel has V P, and eagle head proofs and has the inspector initials "R" and "HN" (Henry Nettleton). The left side of the receiver wall is marked with the three line address/patent dates with arrows pointing towards the middle. The serial number is marked on the top of the left receiver wall followed by the inspector initials "HN". The rear sight is graduated to 1400 with 1-6 on the base and "HC" for Hotchkiss Carbine on the left side. One piece straight grip stock with single barrel band, circled "P" behind the trigger guard, and Samuel W. Porter inspector cartouche dated 1881.
BBL: 24 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 45-70
Finish: blue
Grips:
Serial Number: 12793
Condition: Good. The carbine retains traces original blue finish (mostly in the protected areas) with the balance a smooth brown-gray patina. There is some minor pitting on the bolt assembly with heavier pitting on the inside of the trigger guard. The stock has a mended crack on the right side of the wrist which is common for this type of carbine, otherwise the refinished wood is good with some minor handling marks. The SWP/1881 cartouche is clear.
