U.S. H. Deringer Contract Model 1817 Flintlock Musket

This is an example of a later production U.S. Model 1817 musket that was manufactured by Henry Deringer of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Deringer manufactured approximately 13,000 of these muskets. The Deringer manufactured muskets had notable differences from the Springfield manufactured Model 1817s such as the trigger plate without the pistol grip projection and the sling swivel mounted on the trigger guard. The center of the lock plate is marked with the smaller "US" over "H. DERINGER/PHILADA" and it is dated "1841" behind the hammer. The top of the barrel is marked "US/P" and the barrel tang is dated "1842". Blade front and notch rear sights, three barrel bands, iron patch box and ramrod with brass tip, and brass flash pan without a fence. Mounted with a full walnut stock with two visible cartouches on the left flat and iron buttplate with "US" marked tang.

Fair as refinished and reconverted to flintlock with most of the brown finish remaining. The lock and hammer have a smooth dark patina. The stock has been freshened and remains very good with a pieced in repair on the upper right side ahead of the lock and overall some scattered minor dents and dings. The rear barrel band spring is in the down position. The maker's mark on the lock is partially visible and the remaining markings are clear. There is some play in the hammer, otherwise the action is fine.
