This is an excellent example of a scarce type I variation of Model 1911A1 pistol as manufactured by the Union Switch & Signal Company in 1943. Union Switch & Signal only made one block of contract pistols in 1943. The left side of the slide is marked with the intertwined "USS" for the Union Switch and Signal Co. and "U.S.& S. CO./SWISSVALLE, PA. U.S.A.". The left side of the frame is marked with the circular proof of "RCD" for LTC Robert Downie the U.S. Government inspector. The right side of the frame is marked "UNITED STATES PROPERTY" over the serial number and "M1911A1 U.S. ARMY". "HS" marked barrel, the trigger is blue. The trigger, slide stop, thumb safety, hammer and arched mainspring housing are all checkered. The grips are brown checkered plastic with reinforcing rings around the screws. The magazine is blue with no markings.
