This is a fine example of a U.S. Colt Model 1878/1902 Double Action Revolver from the lot of approximately 4,600 revolvers purchased for issue to the Philippine Constabulary circa 1902. The revolver has the distinctive oversize trigger guard and elongated trigger which are unique to the Model 1902 Double Action Revolver. The revolver has a bird's head butt and two-piece black checkered hard rubber grips. The grips feature the Rampant Colt in an oval. A casehardened swivel lanyard loop is fitted on the butt. The revolver has the Colt high polish commercial blue finish. The trigger and top of the hammer have a niter blue finish, the sides of the hammer are polished bright. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "COLT'S PT. F.A.MFG. Co. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A." in a single line. The caliber designation, "45 COLT." is roll-stamped on the left side of the barrel. The underside of the barrel is stamped with a "K" Colt inspection mark and an Ordnance "P" proof. The right side of the frame has a "U.S." property mark stamped above the trigger guard bow. The Ordnance inspector's initials "JTT" stamped just above the top of the right grip and the date "1902" in front of it. The Ordnance sub-inspector's initials "R.A.C." are stamped on the left front trigger guard bow. The circled Rampant Colt is stamped on the lower left side of the frame just ahead of the grip. The rear face of the cylinder is stamped with "R.A.C.", a "P" proofmark and the partial serial number "7127". The partial serial number "7127" is also stamped on the rear face of the loading gate. The full serial number "47/127" is stamped in two lines on the butt in front of the lanyard loop. All of the visible serial numbers match.
BBL: 6 inch
Stock:
Gauge: 45 Long Colt
Finish: Blue
Grips: black hard rubber
Serial Number: 47127
Condition: Fine. The revolver retains 60% of the original high polish blue finish with numerous small scratches and storage/handling marks. There is moderate holster wear on the muzzle and edge of the ejector housing. The back strap has moderate-heavy handling wear and has a silver-gray patina. Significant amounts of the niter blue finish remain on the trigger and hammer. The Colt markings and Ordnance inspection marks on the barrel, cylinder, frame and loading gate are crisp. The hard rubber grips show the same wear as the revolver frame but remains good overall. The action functions fine. This is a solid example of a key piece in any advanced collection of U.S. Contract Colt handguns.
