This is one of the 1860 Army revolvers that was converted to cartridge from 1873 to 1878. The particular revolver is marked with two serial numbers on the trigger guard and back strap, "67601" over "1098", (9 over stamped with 0 on the trigger guard), and the wedge is numbered "1098". The back strap is an earlier iron with shoulder stock cut out on the heel variation. The barrel has been period shortened and a dovetailed blade front sight installed. The top of the barrel is marked with the one line New York address, the left side of the frame is marked "COLTS/PATENT" and the upper left front of the trigger guard is marked "44 CAL". The cylinder is roll engraved with the naval battle scene and numbered "098" over an "A" (Ainsworth inspection mark for Army). Fitted with a one-piece varnished walnut grip.
BBL: 5 1/4 inch round
Stock:
Gauge: 44 CF
Finish: blee/casehardened/silver
Grips: walnut
Serial Number: 67601/1098
Condition: Period refinished and modified at the time of conversion with a smooth mottled gray patina on the metal surfaces. The barrel has been shortened and a rifle style sight dovetailed in front. The back strap shows traces of silver plating concentrated on the top and butt. The numbers have been ground off of the frame and barrel. The trigger guard retains 80% silver plating. The grip has been refinished and remains very good with some wear on the lower edge and some scattered minor dings and dents. The cylinder scene is faint and the markings are readable. The action needs work, the cylinder doesn't always rotate when the hammer is cocked.
