U.S. Civil War Smith's Patent Breech Loading Carbine

These carbines were designed by Gilbert Smith and almost all of the production consumed by U.S. government contracts, with limited numbers going to the civilian market. The carbine has a dovetailed German silver blade front sight and folding leaf rear sight absent of yard markings. The left side of the frame is marked "MANUFACTURED BY/AM'N M'CH'N. WKS/SPRINGFIELD MASS", agents' names "ADDRESS/POULTNEY & TRIMBLE/BALTIMORE U.S.A." and "SMITH'S PATENT/JUNE 23, 1857". The left barrel flat is marked "L.F.R" at the breech. The breech loading action has a barrel release latch inside the trigger guard and a saddle ring bar with ring mounted on the left side. Mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock fitted with a steel carbine style buttplate. The left side of the stock wrist has an oval script "JH" cartouche and there is a small "JH" on the top of the stock ahead of the buttplate tang.

Very fine. The barrel retains 60% original blue thinning finish with plum patina on the balance and showing some minor spotting. The action retains 50% faded original case colors with a smooth mottled grayish brown on the balance. The trigger guard and barrel latch retain 70% bright original blue finish with minor spotting. The wood is also very fine with at least 90% original oil finish remaining and showing some scattered minor dents and dings. The cartouche is very crisp. The markings are clear. Mechanically excellent.
