Also known as the Model 1863 in company literature, these carbines were manufactured circa 1863-65. The right front of the frame is marked "MANUFACTURED BY/MASS. ARMS CO./CHICOPEE FALLS", the left side is marked "EDWARD MAYNARD/PATENTEE/MAY 27, 1851/DEC. 6, 1859" and the serial number is marked on the lower tang. The 2nd Model differs from the 1st in that they are made without the Maynard priming system or tang sight, the stock is absent of a patch box and the buttplate is thin, with a square profile. There is a single letter "S" sub-inspectors mark on the left rear barrel flat and on the buttplate tang. Pinched blade front sight and three folding leaf rear sight, saddle ring and bar mounted on the left side of the frame and mounted with a smooth straight grip stock with a clear boxed "JWS" and "JM" cartouches on the left wrist.

The remaining metal surfaces have a smooth dark mottled brown patina with 40% of the original case colors on the lower tang. The stock is excellent with a few minor storage dings and crisp cartouches. The hammer functions but does not hold a cock position due to a missing trigger return spring. The markings are clear.
