Manufactured from 1860 to 1865. Three line "MASS. ARMS CO." address on the right front of the frame and four line "1851/1859" patent marking on the left side, with the saddle ring and bar on the left side. Blade front and three leaf folding rear sights, with "N" on the rear sight base and "S" on the left rear barrel flat. Mounted with a smooth straight grip stock, with sharp "AJN" and "JM" cartouches on the left wrist and a smooth buttplate marked "S" on the heel. These carbines were issued to such Cavalry units as the 9th and 11th Indiana and the 11th Tennessee.

Condition: Very fine. The carbine retains 95% of the original blue finish, showing some light handling marks overall. 60% of original case colors remain on the frame, strongest in the protected areas, with some bright wear along the high edges and mild spots. The stock is also very fine, with some scattered minor scratches, pressure dents and chips. There is a barely noticeable hairline crack on the left side of wrist which extends parallel to the tang for approximately 5 inches. Clear markings. Mechanically excellent.
