U.S. 1851 percussion “Mississippi” rifle by E. Whitney, .54 caliber, browned barrel, brass mounted with brass patchbox, woven sling, 33” barrel, in overall very good to fine condition displaying the majority of its original brownfinish on barrel, crisp action and markings, very good to fine stock with old stamped “69” and “216” on butt stock in front of the patchbox assembly. Accompanied by a handwritten note from the consignor stating his belief that this rifle wasoriginally condemned by the U.S. Gov’t as the barrel was iron instead of steel which the Gov’t decreed to be what they wanted as of 1849. He further states that these were therefore surplus parts left over from previous contracts so Whitney sold these guns to the states right before & during the Civil War. He also notes he bought this rifle from a man whose grandfather had purchased it from Bannerman’s in New York and his opinion that the numbers indicate 69th Reg’t (possiblyN.Y. Irish Brigade), #216. (Antique). Est.: $2,000-$4,000.
