A) The 1863 dated lock plate has the standard "eagle/shield" and "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" markings with the breechblock dated 1870 with the eagle head/cross arrows over "US". Matching number on barrel and receiver. Blade front sight/bayonet lug and ladder rear sight, with sling swivels, two barrel bands, boxed cartouche on the left stock flat and iron ramrod.

Condition: Very good. The barrel, barrel bands and forend cap have a smooth mottled brown patina, with a smooth mottled gray patina on the remaining metal surfaces. The stock is also good with scattered minor dings, dents and scratches associated with a gun of this age. The markings are clear. The action is excellent.

B) Blade front and Buffington rear sights. The barrel has the standard "V/P/ eagle head/ V" markings. Low arch breechblock marked "U.S./ MODEL/ 1873" and the lock plate is marked "U.S./ SPRINGFIELD" next to an eagle with shield. Smooth straight grip stock with ramrod, 2 barrel bands, "SWP/ 1889" cartouche, circled script "P" in the grip area, a small "W" stamped directly behind the lower tang and smooth "US" marked buttplate. Complete with a U.S. marked Model 1873 socket bayonet, 18" blade, with metal scabbard and frog. The rifle appears to be one of the Model 1879 rifles refinished at Rock Island Arsenal during the Spanish-American War.

Condition: Arsenal refinished. The barrel has a smooth brown patina. The lock and hammer retain 50% dull case colors with a smooth gray patina on the balance. The trigger guard retains most of the blue finish with a few moderate scratches. The stock is very good with a few overall scattered minor dings and dents, with clear cartouche. The markings are clear. The action is excellent. The bayonet retains 95% original blue finish and the scabbard retains 85% original blue finish with scattered minor oxidation. The stitching on the frog remains tight.
