Tommy Nora Walker (Ann-Margret) Costume
The turbulent and ever changing 1960's ended with a resounding roar with the premiere of the world's first Rock Opera, The Who's "Tommy". And the world of music was never the same. It took six years for this ground-breaking masterpiece to make it to the big screen, and with the one director who was born to shoot it: Ken Russell. With an all-star cast including the original members of The Who, plus such super-talents as Jack Nicholson, Eric Clapton, Elton John, Tina Turner, Oliver Reed and Ann-Margret, the film was an ear and eye-popping feast of the senses! The most iconic sequence, and the most memorable, was the "Smash the Mirror" number where Tommy's mother, (Ann-Margret), drunk on champagne and filled with the guilt for having turned her only son into a blind, deaf and dumb "Pinball Wizard" celebrity (and racking in the money from exploiting him), rants and raves in her all-white bedroom, wearing that never to be forgotten tight knit body suit. And what everyone remembers the most is when her TV set erupts with a torrent of soap suds, baked beans, and finally a massive flood of dark chocolate, which Ann-Margret not only wallows in, but uses to sexually slither up and down a large phallic pillow on her bed! This is that screen worn body suit from this cinematic treasure, created by legendary award-winning costume designer Shirley Russell (Ken's wife, who worked on over a dozen of his films). There were two versions of the outfit made. The first, used in the first half of the sequence were white, and the second, used at the end, when Ann-Margret is drenched from head to toe in dark chocolate as she spins in an "egg chair", and sits at a full length mirror, were a light-gold. Russell also created an exquisite full-length matching knit coat. However, when originally put on, it was so heavy that it was decided to forgo the coat entirely, much to the delight of the audience who then were able to enjoy Ann-Margret's figure in all its body-suit chocolate-soaked glory! These are the light-gold version. The body-suit and coat were originally purchased in London after the production was completed, and the body-suit was covered with dried chocolate and beans. However, the buyer wanted to give it to his wife to be worn, so the body-suit was professionally dry cleaned. It was then that the true value of the outfit become apparent, and they decided to carefully preserve them in an air-tight wardrobe bag. The outfit comes with the original strap-thin matching belt. A wider second belt was also worn over this which is not part of the ensemble. The body-suit and rare never before seen full-length coat are in pristine condition. One of the all time great collectibles'! Comes with a Letter of Provenience.
