Tom Hanks Castaway Ice Skate & Necklace
What can you say about a movie where grown men were seen in the darkened theater crying over a lost volley ball? Yes, we all know the ball’s name was Wilson, and the movie was the harrowing modern take on Robinson Crusoe, “Cast Away” (2000). The story of a Fed Ex employee, Chuck Noland (Tom Hanks) who survives a plane crash and ends up on a deserted island has been told many times before. But something about this one just got under the skin of its audience which made it a smash at the box office. Sensitively directed by Robert Zemeckis (“Forrest Gump” 1994, the “Back to the Future” trilogy), a good two-thirds of the movie has Hanks solo on the island with the beloved volley ball, trying to survive. When boxes from the downed plane wash ashore with Fed Ex goodies, he uses them in all kinds of creative ways. One of the most harrowing is the use of an ice skate. It’s a scene no one will ever forget. Hanks has a horrible toothache, and using the blade of the skate as a mirror, he sees that he has a seriously abscessed tooth. It must come out. So using the blade of one of the skates as the crudest of dental tools, he places the edge of the blade against his bad tooth, and with the help of a rock slams it into his mouth, knocking both the tooth, and himself… out! He finally escapes the island when a large section of a plastic Andy Gump outhouse washes ashore, and gives him the idea to make a raft. When he finally does escape on the raft, he only takes Wilson, some coconuts to gather rain water, and two crudely made necklaces with him. One necklace holds a pocket watch, and the other holds the tooth he knocked out. As an added bonus, we are including the actual hero screen used tooth necklace, worn by Hanks during this heroic escape off the island. These are two great pieces of cinema history from one of the most beloved movies of the decade. Both come with Certificates of Authenticity. (The skate is approx 11X11x3” and the necklace is approx 22” long).
