The best-known pair of consecutively numbered Colt Single Action Army revolvers made for “The Battle of Britain” formally housed in the Jerry D. Berger and Fred Sweeny collections. The pair are .45 caliber with 4 ¾” barrels, factory nickel plated, hard rubber grips, sold to British purchasing commission in New York, New York, shipped to Winchester Arms Company, New Haven, Connecticut,(Winchester shipped all the arms for the British purchasing commission) June 18th , 1940 with 24 guns in shipment, serial numbers 356100 and 356101. Consecutive pairs of Colt single actions shipped to the same location are almost nonexistent and this is the only pair known to this cataloger with their configurations. The pair show late British broad head proof on the top edge of each front facing back strap. The pistols are remaining in fine to near mint condition retaining 99% plus uncleaned and unpolished original nickel finish with no evidence of firing or use and just a couple of minor handling and shipping marks. The pair retain all original parts and are 100% authentic. A well-made English style display case is included. These Battle of Britain Colts are listed in several references including “A Study of the Colt Single Action Revolver” by Kopec and Graham where the serial numbers are listed on page 182 and the proof on the back strap is described and illustrated in a later text. Two factory letters dated 1972 addressed to Jerry D. Berger are included in the Provenance. Battle of Britain Colt single actions are very sought after by collectors and this consecutive set is the ultimate. Est.: $25,000-$50,000.
