The best known Winchester Model 1873, 1st type “One of One Thousand” with arabesque “1 of 1000” inscription remaining in near fine original condition with long provenance as one of the first 20 “One of One Thousands” reported in “The Winchester 73” motion picture search with its original companion Model 94 awarded by Winchester. This rifle shows a 24” octagon barrel, full magazine, set trigger, peep and beach sights, 3X checkered pistol grip stock with steel shotgun butt plate, blue and case hardened finish, received in the warehouse July 30th , 1875 shipped from the warehouse July 30th , 1875 to order number 3745 with all features confirmed by factory letter except butt configuration not listed. This rifle shows 80% to 90% original blue on the barrel just starting to drift and tone near the muzzle and some minor losses along the edges with a few slight scratches. The frame shows 75% to 85% original case hardening with some very vivid rainbow colors just starting to tone and age naturally with some slight drift at the edges to silver color. The thumb print dust cover, hammer, lever and forend cap all show at least 50% to 70% case hardened colors. The loading gate and trigger show most of their original bright blue. The stocks are fine to near excellent with crisp checkering and just some minor handling and minimal storage scratches and a couple light marks. The thumb print on dust cover is razor-sharp and shows some brilliant and fiery case hardening at the edge. The bore is bright and the rifling is near excellent. This rifle is 100% authentic and shows correct small parts and sights. This rifle is listed on page 65 of “The Golden Age of American Gun Making and The Winchester 1 of 1000” and on page 31 of “The Story of 1 of 1000 and 1 of 100 Rifles” by Edmund E. Lewis. Provenance Iver Johnson sporting goods, Boston, Mass 1935, Fred P. L. Mills, June 6, 1935 to 1965, Jackson Arms Dallas, Texas item number 688, catalog number 22 in 1965, Bobby Burns 1965 to 1993, Paul Sorrell and Mike Clark 1993, David’s Firearms, David Bichrest former president of Winchester Collectors Association, Leon Budginas, Eric Vaule, John R. Gangel, to Bert Jolicouer 2004. Early model 1873 deluxes under serial number 10,000 are difficult to find in any condition and the handful of 1873 One of One Thousands that have high condition are primarily later manufactured guns. It is the belief of this cataloger and several arms experts whose letters are included in this rifles extensive provenance package “That this rifle serial number 6594 is the very best example extant with the early arabesque 1 of 1000 inscription”. The research portfolio included with this lot has letters from many experts concerning this rifle including David Bichrest, John Malloy, R.L. Wilson, Eldon Owens, Eric Vaule, Paul Sorrell and others. Also included with the lot is the 1894 Winchester awarded with this rifle serial number 1674643 in excellent condition showing 98% to 99% plus original blue with a couple of small scratches and handling marks only.
