The Crossing &The Crisis by Winston Churchill
Featured in this lot are a first edition and an early edition of Winston Churchill's books, "The Crossing" and "The Crisis". "The Crossing" was published by The Macmillan Company in 1904. The book is a novel concerning the United States Westward expansion and settlement of Kentucky. The piece features numerous illustrations by Sydney Adamson and Lilian Bayliss. The second book, "The Crisis", was copyrighted in 1901; this is a latter printing in 1901 by the Macmillan Company. The novel is set in the years leading up to the first battles of the American Civil War, mostly in the divided state of Missouri. It follows the fortunes of young Stephen Brice, a man with Union and abolitionist sympathies, and his involvement with a Southern family. Winston Churchill (1871 – 1947) was an American best-selling novelist of the early 20th century. He is nowadays overshadowed, even as a writer, by the more famous British statesman of the same name, to whom he was not related.
