The Battle of The Little Big-Horn , Sandoz 1st Ed
Presented in this lot is this First Edition of "The Battle of The Little Big Horn" by Mari Sandoz. Mari Sandoz’s beautifully written account of the battle in which General George Armstrong Custer staked his life—and lost it—reveals on every page the author’s intimate knowledge of her subject. The character of the Sioux, the personality of Custer, the mixed emotions of Custer’s men, the plains landscape—all emerge with such clarity that the reader is transported to that spring in 1876 when the Army of the Plains began its fateful march toward Yellowstone. Mari Sandoz’s (1896-1966) final book was the first analysis of Custer’s motives and political ambitions to shed light on an old mystery that will be hotly disputed by the general’s admirers. Sandoz was a Nebraska novelist, biographer, lecturer and teacher. She became one of the West's foremost writers, and wrote extensively about pioneer life and the Plains Indians. Her books include "Old Jules", "Crazy Horse", "Cheyenne Autumn", "The Buffalo Hunters", and "The Cattlemen". This book is in good overall condition, black cloth over red paper boards with gilt gold lettering on the spine, front cover depicts stamped arrows and stars with an Army cannon between. Cover is clean, intact pages have stain on some edges, age tanning noted, rear of dust jacket has staining, slight scuffiing and tears. Measurements are 5.75"W x 8.5"L x .75"D approximately.
