TALKING STICK BY JIM YELTON
Talking Sticks, or Speaker Staffs, have been in use on the Northwest Coast for generations, going back to time immemorial and are an instrument of Indigenous governance. It is known that they are an important and respected badge of the speaker during Potlatches, feasts, and ceremonial occasions. This piece depicts an eagle on the top, as well as a beaver, whale, and raven at the base. Coast Salish carver Jim Yelton is mostly self-taught, although he did receive some assistance in the beginning from his father. He started to carve at age twelve. He is well-known for his detailed talking sticks and bold carvings.
