Taino. PreColumbian. Gaming ball with 2 salamander like creatures encircling the ball. The curvilinear lines symbolize water, thus the animal association. The salamanders are full bodied and well defined. Extremely unusual to find animals on gaming balls. It should be noted, that although these are called gaming balls they had some other unknown ritual use. The balls are well finished and rarely show any sign of impact wear from gaming. Made from a dense stone possibly andesite. Diameter 2.5”. Taino Culture c600-1500 AD. Private collection, Decatur Ga. BIDDING
Bidding advances shall be regulated by the auctioneer and shall be at his discretion. He or she has the right to refuse any bids. Some of the items offered at auction are subject to a reserve. A reserve is a minimum price agreed upon by the consignor of the property and the auction house. The auctioneer may bid on behalf of the consignor in order to reach the minimum sale amount. If the minimum amount is not reached, the auctioneer may pass the item. The auctioneer reserves the right to bid on behalf of clients and vendors, but shall not be liable for errors or omissions in executing instructions to bid.
