Swiss Vetterli 1871 Stutzer Double Set Triggers 10.4mm Bolt Action Rifle Antique
Swiss Vetterli 1871 Stutzer Double Set Triggers 10.4mm Bolt Action Rifle 1871-75 ANTIQUE

Our Assessment:This Swiss Vetterli is a Rare Model 1871 Stutzer that was made at Waffenfabrik Bern between 1871 and 1875 and chambered in 10.4mm Vetterli. It was made with double set triggers as the rifle was made for accuracy. These rifles were carried by light infantry sharpshooters. This rifle has been rebuilt. It has matching numbers on the receiver, barrel shank, bottom of the shell carrier, and bolt handle. Given its scarcity, this will make a wonderful addition to a Vetterli collection.

Stock Configuration & Condition:The hardwood stock has a straight grip, (nose cap is missing), cut out for the included cleaning rod, 2 barrel bands, 2 sling loops, and a metal buttplate. The buttplate and stock hardware show surface erosion, wear, and a brown patina. The stock shows scratches, compression marks, cracks, and repairs; some cracks flex. The left side of the stock, at the magazine, is missing wood from a previous arsenal repair. The LOP measures 13" from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stocks rate in about Fair Plus overall condition, as ANTIQUE.

Type of Finish:This rifle has lost its finish.

Bore Condition:The bore has deep rifling; shallow at the muzzle. The muzzle and grooves are gray due to erosion. In this writer's opinion and for the age, the bore rates a 5 out of 10.Most ANTIQUE firearms have bores that will show erosion. This not only due to age but to the use of black powder. When fired, black powder reacts corrosively. NRA ANTIQUE Firearm Conditions Standards are quite lenient for bores. In some cases, the NRA standards disregarded the bore's condition for collectors' firearms.

Overall Condition:The rifle has lost its metal finish. It shows scrapes, scuffs, light surface erosion, and a brown patina. The rear of the bolt assembly is dented. The screw heads are sharp, some show light tool marks. Most markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Fair condition, as ANTIQUE.

Mechanics:The action does not function. There may be missing internal parts. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a more thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
