For sale in this lot is a Stevens Model 425 High Power Lever Action Repeating Rifle chambered in .32 Remington Center Fire Caliber, serial number 1609. The Stevens Model 425 High Power rifle was only made in very limited numbers from 1910-1917. It is now considered so scarce that many Stevens collectors, if even aware of this model’s existence, have never seen an example, much less have been able to obtain one! The Stevens Company was well known for their beautiful sporting and target single shot rifles and pistols. It is generally thought that by 1910, when their Model 425 rifle was introduced that the lever action rifle market was so dominated by Winchester and, to a lesser extent Marlin, that there was no room for Stevens to make inroads against proven products already in use and general acceptance by the shooting public. As good as the Stevens Model 425 was and as good as the cartridges it fired were, there simply was no way for Stevens to compete with Winchester and Marlin, so they discontinued their only effort to manufacture a lever action rifle after only a few short years. Examples in any condition are rare and most that come on the collector market show hard use and often abuse. This example retains excellent deep receiver blue as well as displaying fine barrel and magazine blue. The bore is excellent and bright, the screw heads are excellent and the wood fixtures show deep finish, with excellent tight wood to metal fit. Interestingly, the Stevens steel crescent butt plates are checkered and this rifle retains the original butt plate (these often replaced with later recoil pads). Tight action and high condition make this a remarkable find for the Stevens, lever action rifle or general firearms collector. The rifle qualifies as a Curio & Relic Long Gun, and requires FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check. Serial Number: 1609.
