Sterling silver hunting case pocket watch belonging to famous sheriff Pat Garrett who immortalized himself by shooting Billy the Kid. This pocket watch was made by National Watch Company of Elgin, Illinois and is serial number 25260. It is described in a letter entitled “Certificate of Authenticity” on the stationary of Jarvis Garrett the son of Pat Garrett who states he believes that his father was using this watch when he shot and killed Billy the Kid. The document is hand signed by Jarvis Garrett and witnessed by Mary Carter. This and two other pocket watches along with a single action Colt were known to of been obtained from Jarvis Garrett by noted New Mexico collector Lang Spraggins while operating The Purple Sage Gun Shop and in the 1970s. We had the pleasure to offer one of the other two watches for sale at auction a few years ago that was presented to Garrett. The front of the watch is inscribed P.G. and the inside of the dust cover is hallmarked with silver makers marks. The watch is accompanied by a well-made silver watch chain and a compass which are seen in a copy of a famous photograph that is included. Also an original jewelers case for this watch is retained. A rare opportunity to obtain a Western artifact that is absolutely documented first hand and well known to collectors for decades. Gale and Kim Kennedy Collection. Est.: $50,000-$100,000.
