Stahl-Bronce Stag Horn Fruit Paring Knives
Featured in this lot are six (6) Vintage Stahl-Bronce Stag Horn Handle Fruit Paring Knives, Germany, circa early 1900s. Each knife is stamped "STAHL-BRONCE" with a "Trident" trademark, cutlery maker unknown. "Stahl bronce" is German for steel bronze, an alloy developed by Colonel Franz von Uchatius (1811-1881), an Austrian general, the preferred metal for Central European fruit knives until supplanted by stainless steel after World War I. The handles of these knives are polished stag, the name for deer antlers. Antler is a strong and durable material that can last for many years with proper care. It is also comfortable to hold and provides a firm grip. German made knives have a reputation for strength and durability, especially cutlery knives. These steel bronze stag horn knives are in good overall condition, consistent patina on the blades with some oxidation noted where blade enters ferrules. Natural patina and splits noted on stag handles which appear to be from normal aging, no other obvious marring noted. each measures 6.75"L, blade is 3.75"L approximately.
