Antique U.S. Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor Single Shot Carbine, shortened from an Infantry rifle, #382540, .45-70 Gov't. CF cal., 23.5'' round barrel with raised bead-blade front and ''R''-marked Buffington rear sight, marked ''V/P/(eagle head)/P'' and ''A'' at breech; ''Trapdoor'' breechblock marked ''US/Model/1884'' at hinge; a 9-digit number is electro-penciled on right side of receiver; flat lockplate has ''(spread-wing eagle and shield)'' and ''U.S. Springfield'' below breech latch; iron furniture includes single spring-retained barrel band, two-piece trigger guard with sling swivel at front (now missing), curved buttplate marked ''US'' at top screw; one-piece oil-stained walnut stock. Mfg'd ca. 1886-91. Condition is very good as altered. Metal surfaces are clean, dark gunmetal gray with clear markings. Stock lacks the left-side inspector's cartouche and shows rather crude workmanship where re-worked at nose. Action is crisp; bore shows black powder etching toward muzzle with defined rifling.
