Springfield Model 1878 trapdoor carbine in .45-70 caliber showing filed off or removed serial number but remaining in good to very good condition with 1881 dated cartouche in the stock. The barrel shows 30%-50% toning original blue. The lock shows traces of original blue with sharp Springfield and Eagle marks along with 1873 date. The breech block and hammer show traces of original colors. The stock is very good plus with some small marks, minor losses, slight scorching around butt plateand normal aging. The cartouche is well defined and 95% visible with the initials “S.V.W. and “1881” date. The bore is good to very good. A very nice carbine that had the number removed long ago possibly by Indians or outlaws when captured from the Cavalry. There is a name “MAVON” and carved into the wood in front of the trigger guard in old block letters and also a P proof barely visible behind the trigger guard. Est.: $800-$1600
