Springfield Model 1878 trapdoor carbine in .45-70 caliber, serial number 139838 in very good original condition retaining considerable original blue finish. The barrel shows 40% to 60% original blue turning brown with some areas of erosion and pinprick pitting just starting. The lock plate shows 30% to 50% original blue as does the hammer with some erosion and beginning pitting. The breech and trapdoor along with the tang show considerable traces of case hardening within their patina. The barrel band shows 50% to 70% original blue. The butt plate shows 50% to 70% bright blue with blue on the door and the rod still inside. The rear sight and small parts are all correct but missing saddle ring which was removed. The trigger guard shows 30% to 50% blue and losses behind the trigger guard from cleaning. The stock is good with some dings, mars and wear in the area of the cartouche which is not visible but there is the P proof mostly visible behind the trigger guard in the stcok. The action is good, the bore is bright and at least very good. A considerably better than average Indian war period carbine. Est.: $750-$1500
