Springfield Model 1878 carbine .45-.70 caliber. Serial # 19322X last digit not legible. The carbine has been period decorated by Southwest Indians probably Apache Tribe discovered 1960’s near Yuma,Arizona. We first became aware of this carbine when it was in a sheriff’s collection in the Yuma area who displayed it at the Old Armory Show. By tradition the sheriff took it off a local whose great grandfather usedit as a scout for the prison when he tracked escaped prisoners. We identified it by the unique large brass ornaments and we next examined the gun in the 1980’s when offered for sale by Troy Galleries, Scottsdale whohad obtained it from the sheriffs heirs. Troy Galleries sold the gun to a prominent Western Artist who used it in his paintings and displayed it in his Western theme bar room from the 1980’s until Little John’s Inc. acquired it from him. The carbine shows a dark brown patina with scattered pitting and erosion. The stock is wrapped with thick hide with hair still attached. The stock is decorated with well aged genuine to the
