Springfield Model 1816 Flintlock Musket, Altered to Percussion at Frankford Arsenal Utilizing a Remington Tape Primer Lock, with Sling, NVSN, .69 cal., unmarked 41.5" round barrel has bayonet stud .75" below muzzle, nipple bolster with cleanout screw; beveled lockplate marked "Remington's/Ilion, N.Y./1857/U.S." vertically behind hammer has Maynard tape priming mechanism with brass door; std. M-1816 steel furniture incl. trigger guard with sling swivel, buttplate marked "US", 3 bands (middle with sling swivel, upper of the double-strap type having integral sight), button-tip ramrod. Oil-stained walnut fullstock has typical M-1816 low comb and 2 oval inspectors' cartouches opposite lock. Condition is good as configured, being generally smooth gray/brown gunmetal showing scattered discoloration, good edges and markings. Primer door and crude welding/finishing evident at breech, and touchhole areas are likely period gunsmith work. Stock is sound and smooth showing faint inspectors' marks, minor dings, 9" crudely replaced wood below muzzle, secure 2.5" hairline crack at left wrist, later finish. Action is crisp, smoothbore shows heavy erosion. Leather sling has minor surface crackling but is sound. Est.: $1,000-$1,500. (Antique)
