Springfield First Model Trapdoor carbine, .45-70 caliber with all early first type features, serial #17464 in desirable Custer range, probably in group issued to 7th Cavalry at the time of The Little Big Horn.Refer Custer Battle Guns by John S. duMont, pages 87-88 where Chief of Ordinance notes lists 17485 and 17490 as government recaptured from insurgent Indians and several other guns in the 17400 range noted later in the text. The gun remains in original good to very good condition showing 30-40% thinning blue on barrel, some scattered light erosion and pinprick pitting. There are traces of case hardening on the breech andlockplate going to a patina. The stock is good to very good and shows correct long wrist and the outline of a cartouche, some even wear and faint evidence of “P” in circle behind triggerguard. The carbine showscorrect early split band, sight, early triggerguard, 1873 lock marking, and long wrist with correct buttplate. The action is good, bore is slightly rough and has seen use.
