The star after the SN indicates a gun assembled by Springfield from useable old parts for reissue to second line troops. The NJ stamped on the receiver might mean issue to the New Jersey National Guard. By serial number records, this gun was issued in 1882: lock plate is stamped "U.S. Springfield" over the date "1873". The Springfield Armory stopped stamping the date1873 on lock plates sometime around 1877, so this lock plate is from an earlier gun, possibly Custer Era: rear sight is marked with a "C", 22" barrel with standard military sight graduated to 1500 yards, one piecesmooth straight grip stock has 1 barrel band and steel butt plate. Good bore and action. Condition: Very good. Metal parts have been cleaned to a mottled blue-gray finish, butt plate has a sliding door for access to thecleaning rod compartment, stock is nice, probably refinished, but there is a trace of the circle "P" inspection stamp behind the trigger guard.
