Fixed blade front sight and folding rear sight graduated to 900 yards. The top of the receiver is marked "MODEL/1865" and "SPENCER REPEATING RIFLE/PAT'd MARCH 6 1860/MANUF'D. AT PROV. R.I./BY BURNSIDE RIFLE CO.", and the matching serial number is marked behind the hammer and on the bottom of the barrel under the forearm. The left rear of the barrel is marked "J.L.C.". Most parts are marked with a single letter inspection mark, "L", "B", "A", "W" and "C". Blue barrel and casehardened remaining parts, saddle ring and bar mounted on the left wrist and mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a sling swivel. The left side of the stock behind the saddle ring bar is stamped with two boxed cartouches. Although most Model 1865 Spencer carbines were delivered too late for use in the Civil War, they were used extensively by cavalry regiments on the frontier until replaced by the U.S. Model 1873 Springfield Carbine.

Condition: Very good. The metal surfaces have traces of blue with the balance a mottled grey and brown patina with some pitting on the barrel and buttplate. There is some pitting beginning to develop on the right side of the receiver. The wood is also very good with some overall scattered minor dings and dents. The cartouches and receiver markings are both clear. Mechanically fine.
