S/N 30854, .50 RF caliber, converted from Civil War period cavalry carbine to hunting rifle. 25 inch octagon barrel, plum brown, receiver plum brown with some silver. 11.5 pounds total, original butt stock and forearm, complete magazine tube with spring and follower, circa late 1860s.
Condition: Bore has heavy left hand twist, iron is smooth overall, stock has cracks due to thin wood over magazine tube, forearm has some wood missing, sling bar removed, “bead” for front sight missing, rear sight is a current handmade full buckhorn, small hole forward of sight was probably for the original sight, mechanically very good.

After the Civil War and before the advent of the large center fire cartridges, the Spencer was the best choice for large game. It combined a large caliber with the 7 shot repeating feature. This one is a well-used frontier rifle.

Provenance: From the Estate of Thomas W. Lorimer.
