This is a spectacular example of a Remington Model 1863 "Zouave" rifle that was manufactured circa 1862 - 1865 with a total production of approximately 12,500. These rifles were one of the best designed and made military arms of the Civil War era. In the U.S. contract these rifles were termed "Harpers Ferry Pattern". The lock is dated 1863 behind the hammer, the eagle/shield over "U.S." and "REMINGTON'S/ILION, N.Y." in front of the hammer and there is a Sub-Inspectors "L" stamped at the front. The top of the barrel at the breech is dated "1863" over the "V/ P/eagle head" proofs. The left rear flat is marked "STEEL" and "R.K.A". There is a "B" on the hammer and "L" on the lower tang ahead of the trigger guard. The barrel bands are correctly marked with a "U". The front sight is fixed and the rear sight is a three folding leaf type and there is a bayonet lug mounted on the right side of the barrel 3 inches back of the muzzle. The barrel is blue, casehardened lock and hammer with all brass mountings. Iron ramrod with tulip head. Mounted with a full one-piece straight grip walnut stock with a brass carbine style buttplate and patch box. The patch box is stamped with a "L" and the buttplate tang is stamped with "US" and a "L". The left stock flat is marked with two sharp boxed script cartouches. The patch box contains an extra percussion nipple.

The stock is also excellent plus with a few minor dings along the bottom edge of the left flat, a small gouge on the left rear at the buttplate and overall a few minor dings and handling marks. The markings and cartouches are sharp. The action is excellent.
