This is a spectacular example of a German Burgsmuller Schuetzen rifle with a Martini action. The barrel is equipped with a shrouded front sight, no rear sight and provisions for a tang sight. There is a 6 1/4" dovetailed quarter rib flat on the breech end of the barrel for scope or sight mounting. The top of the barrel at the breech is marked "H. BURGSMULLER KREIENSEN" (probably gold or silver inlaid at one time), the bottom of the barrel, under the forearm is marked "1" and crown over "U", "B" and "G" proofs over "172,28 / 5.03 / 415" and the matching serial number and a double stamped "B" and a "V" are marked ahead of the forearm. Two iron ramrod pipes (with a sling swivel on the rear) are mounted on the bottom of the barrel. Blue barrel and casehardened remaining parts with floral scroll engraving with a matte background on the receiver and lever/trigger guard. In addition the sides of the receiver have a oval panel depicting a well dressed 18th Century man holding rifle. Double set triggers. The forearm has a leaf design carved on the forend with a matte background, and checkering on the bottom at the receiver. The stock is checkered on the wrist, has a high cheekpiece and a carved scene of a deer running in the woods, and is fitted with a Swiss style buttplate.
