This rifle won the NRA "Ten Best Weapons Award" in 1985, was the "Gun of the Month" in May 1978 issue of "Gun Report Magazine" and is pictured in "THE BOOK OF WINCHESTER ENGRAVING" 2nd edition, by R.L. Wilson. The Cody Firearms Museum letter that accompanies this rifle states that it was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on March 17, 1906. The letter lists the rifle features as 30 caliber, 22-inch round barrel, extra light, plain trigger, fancy wood stock with pistol grip, Lyman rear, leaf and front sights, 1/2 magazine, shotgun butt with rubber buttplate, takedown, and Carved D. The letter describes the engraving and presentation plates as engraved $10.00, round gold plate in both sides of stock - left side engraved monogram "J.R.H.", right side engraved presented to J.R. Haskin by the Westinghouse Employees at Niagara Falls, February 1906. The rifle has a blue barrel, half-magazine, forearm cap and receiver. The hammer and lever are color casehardened. The forearm cap, top of the barrel near the receiver, take-down collar and receiver are engraved with Winchester "No. 6" engraving. The decoration is a scroll border and outline engraving and features a white tail buck in a panel on the right side of the receiver and a bighorn ram in a panel on the left side of the receiver. The forearm and pistol grip stock are highly figured fancy grain walnut with Winchester "Style D" checkered and relief-carved oak leaf and acorns. The stock has a black hard rubber pistol grip cap embossed with "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS" and a black checkered hard rubber shotgun buttplate with the Winchester logo embossed in a circle. The stock and forearm have an oiled satin finish. Round gold-plated brass presentation plates are inlaid in both sides of the stock. The 22-inch round lightweight barrel has a Winchester "Express" front sight with ivory bead and a three-leaf folding "Express" rear sight with platinum sight lines. A Lyman folding combination rear sight is mounted on the receiver tang. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the legend "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A. PATENTED AUGUST 21.1894" in two lines ahead of the rear sight. "NICKEL STEEL BARREL/ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER" is roll-stamped in two lines on the left side of the barrel below the rear sight. The caliber designation "30 W.C.F." is stamped on the left side of the barrel ahead of the receiver. The Winchester oval, "W/P" proofmark is stamped on the top of the barrel ahead of the engraved scroll work and on the top of the receiver. The serial number, "274574" is stamped across the bottom of the front edge of the receiver. The rifle is complete with the NRA 1985 "Ten Best Weapons Medallion".
BBL: 22 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 30 WCF
Finish: blue
Grips:
Serial Number: 274574
Condition:
Excellent. The rifle is all original and retains more than 90% of the original blue and casehardened finish. The barrel and half-magazine show only minor handling wear with some takedown scratches on the underside of the barrel in front of the magazine. The blue finish on the underside of the forearm cap is thinning slightly. The blue finish on the contact points of the takedown collar, top and bottom of the receiver have some handling wear and is thin. The balance of the blue finish on the sides and top of the receiver shows minimal wear. The case colors on the hammer and lever are intact but have faded to a dark patina. The loading gate retains most of the niter blue finish. The game scenes and engraving on the receiver and other components are crisp. The factory markings are sharp. The fancy walnut stock and forearm are excellent. The relief carved oak leaf and acorn decorations and the fine checkering are sharp and show minimal handling wear. Most of the gold finish has worn off the inlaid inscription and monogram plates but the engraving is crisp and the plates have an attractive patina. The stock and forearm have only a few minor handling marks and retain most of the original oil finish. The buttplate is very fine. This is a spectacular example of an award winning well-documented presentation factory engraved special order Winchester Model 1894 fancy lightweight takedown rifle.
