This factory engraved Colt Pocket Navy Conversion revolver is pictured on page 98 of "FINE COLTS: THE DR. JOSEPH MURPHY COLLECTION" by noted author R.L. Wilson. The revolver has a nickel-plated finish with case-hardened hammer and is engraved with what Wilson describes as heavy leaf scroll engraving on a punch-dot background c. 1870. The small "E" used by Colt to designate special finish or engraving is stamped below the serial number on the frame, trigger guard and back strap. The rimfire hammer is engraved with the hound's head motif and has bordered checkering on the spur. The five-shot cylinder is roll-engraved with the Stage Holdup scene and "COLTS PATENT and engraved with scalloped borders. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "ADDRESS COL SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA " in a panel formed by scallop engraving. The "COLTS/PATENT" marking on the left side of the frame is framed by scrollwork. "36 CAL" is stamped on the left rear trigger guard bow. The serial number "20147" is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and back strap. The partial serial number "147" is stamped on the side of the cylinder. All the visible serial numbers match.
BBL: 4 1/2 inch
Stock:
Gauge: 38 RF
Finish: nickel
Grips: walnut
Serial Number: 20147
Condition: Excellent with 90% plus of the original nickel-plated finish remaining. There is a patch of pitting approximately one-inch square on the right side of the frame at the junction with the back strap and grip that apparently was caused by poor storage. The grip retains about 90% of the high polish varnish with some flaking and finish loss on the left side adjacent to the back strap. The balance of the grip is in excellent condition with minimal wear. With the exception of the storage wear on the frame and grip, the revolver appears to be in nearly new condition. The engraving is sharp and deep. All of the markings are crisp. This is an excellent example of a well documented factory engraved Colt Pocket Navy Conversion revolver.
