Spectacular 16th Century German Wheel-Lock Sporting Gun
Produced circa 1590, this is a fine example of a German production sporting wheel-lock. Blade front and fixed notch rear sights on the heavy, smoothbore barrel. Bright steel lock plate with brass fittings, showing concentric rings on the wheel cover, spring loaded flashpan cover with floral engraved catch, light engraving on the cock and spring, and a pierced-through decorative plate on the spring. Equipped with double set triggers and finger grooved trigger guard. Full length pin mounted stock, with a bone tipped ramrod, forearm grasping grooves, border carving on the reverse of the lock with a pair of floral carved round bone screw escutcheons, scalloped cheekpiece with a carved oval panel featuring a stag in the center and a rectangular panel of a dog pursuing a hare on the bottom, spring retained patch box on the reverse, a second dog-and-hare carved panel on the comb and a flat iron buttplate. Though subtle in adornment, it is a highly attractive German sporting gun.
