Winchester Model 1886 Fancy Sporting Rifle with Cody Firearms Museum letter. The Cody Firearms Museum letter states that this rifle was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on July 30, 1891. The Cody letter describes the rifle as: Caliber: 40/65, Octagon barrel, Plain Trigger and "1/2 Magazine". The rifle has a blued octagon barrel, bolt loading gate and trigger. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer, loading lever and crescent buttplate are color casehardened. The non-listed straight grain walnut stock and forearm have Winchester "Style H" checkering with a varnish finish. The barrel is fitted with a nickel-silver, fixed blade front sight and sporting style rear sight. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "- MANUFACTURED BY THE - / -WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO.NEW HAVEN.CONN.U.S.A.-" ahead of the rear sight and the caliber designation, "40-65 W.C.F." behind it. "-MODEL 1886-" is roll-stamped on the upper receiver tang. The 1884/1885 patent dates and the serial number, "58588" are located on the lower receiver tang.

Condition: Excellent. The rifle retains 95% of the original blue. The barrel, bolt and loading gate have nearly all of the original blue finish. The case colors are 90% intact, mostly on the top and bottom of the receiver and the bottom of the loading lever have a slight silver patina. The case colors on the forearm cap hammer and sides of the receiver and loading lever remain vivid. The buttplate has a smooth, silver-gray, patina. The barrel and receiver markings are crisp. The bore is bright. The stock and forearm are in excellent condition; the checkered panels are sharp with minimal handling wear, nearly all of the original varnish finish is intact. The stock and forearm show only very minimal storage wear. This is an excellent example of a Winchester Model 1886 Fancy Sporting Rifle with octagon barrel, half-magazine, casehardened receiver and checkered stock and forearm.
